Is WhatsApp actually a sales channel now, or just a chat app for your brand?

I used to think of WhatsApp purely as where customer support happens after a sale, not before it. That's changed for us too — enough that it's now a real line item in how we plan a brand's channels, not an afterthought.
Short answer: yes, and for Indian brands specifically, it's becoming hard to ignore. India has roughly 853.8 million WhatsApp users — the largest WhatsApp market in the world — and shopping catalogues, in-chat checkout, and curated storefronts are now built directly into the app, meaning someone can go from seeing a product to completing a purchase without ever opening a browser.
What changed — wasn't WhatsApp always just for customer support?
For most brands, yes, that's exactly what it was — order confirmations, delivery updates, complaint handling. What's new is that Meta has built actual commerce infrastructure into the chat itself: product catalogues customers can browse inside the app, add-to-cart, and checkout, all without leaving the conversation. That turns WhatsApp from a support channel into something closer to a storefront that happens to also handle support.
Does this actually work for small and mid-size brands, or just big ones?
It works particularly well for smaller and mid-size D2C brands, actually, because it doesn't require the same ad budget or platform expertise that Meta Ads or Instagram growth demands. For brands with proper commerce setups already in place, WhatsApp is contributing somewhere in the 20–35% range of total digital revenue — a meaningful channel, not a nice-to-have, and one that leans on relationship and trust rather than reach and impressions.
What does a brand actually need to set this up properly?
A verified WhatsApp Business API account, a properly structured product catalogue, and — most commonly missed — an actual person or process behind the chat who responds quickly and treats it like a sales conversation, not a ticket queue. Brands that just forward complaints there and never build out catalogue or checkout are leaving the actual commerce value on the table.
If you're not sure whether your brand should be treating WhatsApp as a sales channel or just a support line, that's a quick conversation to sort out.
